TENS vs. EMS: What Is the Difference?

• TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation): gentle pulses that are intended for temporary relief of muscle and joint discomfort

• EMS (electrical muscle stimulation): pulses that are designed to make the muscle contract, often used for training and recovery

• TENS EMS combo unit: one device that offers both kinds of program, so you can switch between them

These devices are tools for comfort and recovery. They do not diagnose or treat a condition, and EMS does not replace exercise.

TENS Machine

A TENS machine has a small control unit, lead wires or a wireless link, and electrode pads. You place the pads around the area, start at the lowest intensity and raise it to a level that feels comfortable. Two options in this range are the Dual EMS & TENS Machine, a portable unit with a digital controller and electrode pads, and the EMS & TENS Therapy Device, a rechargeable dual-channel unit with electrode pads and a USB charging cable.

Wireless TENS Unit

A wireless TENS unit removes the lead wires, which makes it easier to wear under clothing and move around. The Electrical Muscle & Joint Stimulator (Wireless TENS/EMS Device) comes with a remote control and a butterfly-shaped electrode pad.

TENS EMS Combo Unit

Using a TENS or EMS Unit Safely

• Clean and dry the skin, and place the pads as shown in the manual
• Switch the unit off before you place or move pads
• Start at the lowest intensity and increase slowly until it feels comfortable, never painful
• Do not let pads overlap or touch each other
• Replace worn pads when they stop sticking well
• Follow the session time in the manual, and stop if the skin becomes red or irritated

Who Should Ask a Doctor First

TENS and EMS are not suitable for everyone. Ask a healthcare professional before use if you:

• Have a pacemaker, defibrillator or other implanted electronic device
• Are pregnant
• Have epilepsy, a heart condition or an irregular heartbeat
• Have pain that has not been diagnosed
• Have reduced sensation, broken or irritated skin, or an infection in the area
• Have, or have had, a blood clot or cancer

Never place pads on the front or sides of the neck, across the chest, on the head or face, or over the eyes. Do not use a TENS or EMS unit while driving, using machinery, sleeping, or in the bath or shower.
